Can B12 shots make you tired? Not the way people mean it

By the Anywhere Infusions team · Tulsa, OK

Almost everybody who asks us this in Tulsa was already tired before the needle went in. So, can B12 shots make you tired? Not the way the question usually means it. B12 is not a sedative, and nothing in that syringe puts you under. Extreme tiredness does sit on the uncommon side effect list, though, and we take that one seriously.

We list our sources at the bottom so you can check us.

Can B12 shots make you tired, or was the tiredness already there?

Almost always the second one. People book the shot because they are dragging. Then they are still dragging that evening and the shot gets the blame. Tiredness has a long list of ordinary causes before you get anywhere near a vitamin. Fatigue can be a normal response to physical activity, emotional stress, boredom, or lack of sleep. That is sleep, stress, a hard week or plain boredom, not the syringe. And when it is not ordinary, it is usually something bigger than a vitamin gap. But sometimes it can be a sign of a mental or physical condition. Sometimes it points at a condition, physical or mental, that a shot will not touch.

We say that out loud on visits, and it costs us bookings. We would rather lose one than let somebody keep paying us while the real cause sits there.

What the B12 is actually doing in there

Your liver is already sitting on a stockpile, which is the bit nobody expects. It can store a few years' worth of the needed amount. Your liver holds a few years' worth of B12, so a single shot is not a switch you flip. If your level was fine, you have added to a reserve you were not short on. If your level was genuinely low, the fix is a course of injections managed by a doctor, not one visit from us. The federal drug sheet files the injection under one plain category and leaves it there. Cyanocobalamin injection is in a class of medications called vitamins. It is a vitamin going in through a needle. That is the whole mechanism.

The tiredness that does mean call somebody

Nobody puts this half in their marketing. Read it anyway. The same federal drug sheet lists symptoms to report immediately after a B12 injection, and tiredness is on it. fast heartbeat extreme tiredness swelling of the arms, hands, feet, ankles or lower legs Extreme tiredness is on that uncommon list, sitting between a fast heartbeat and swelling in the arms and legs. Uncommon means uncommon. It does not mean ignore it. If a shot leaves you flattened in a way that feels wrong rather than a way that feels like a long week, that is a call to your doctor, today, not a question for a blog.

And if the tiredness has just been going on and on, the government's fatigue page points the same direction we do. They can help you find out what's causing your fatigue and recommend ways to relieve it. Your own provider can work out what is actually causing it and what to do. We can bring you fluids. We cannot run your labs.

Where the B12 shot sits on our menu

Every bag page on our site carries a $25 B12 injection as an add-on, and the nurse can push it while the bag runs. Your first visit comes with one free, which is the offer running at the top of this page, not a secret.

B12 also rides inside two bags rather than beside them. Energy and Hydrate is $199 and carries methylcobalamin along with saline, a B complex, vitamin C and taurine. Migraine Cocktail is $199 and pairs magnesium with methylcobalamin for the days when the lights are too bright. Want fluids with no vitamins at all? Simply Hydrate sits at $99, and an injection on top of it is the same $25. The full menu prices everything the same way.

People also ask us whether a hydration bag has something in it to wake them up. We answered that one separately in the piece on caffeine in a hydration IV, and the answer there is the same shape as the answer here. We come to you across Tulsa and the towns around it, often the same day, at flat menu pricing with no surprise fees.

Dr. Canaday reviews every infusion first. That is not a line for the website, it is how the schedule actually works.

Quick answers

Should I stop the B12 shot if I feel worse?
Talk to the provider who knows your history before you change anything. We are the people who bring the bag, not the people who manage your care. If something felt wrong during a visit, tell your nurse while she is still in the room.
Is the free first visit shot a different dose?
No. It is the same injection we charge $25 for on any bag page, and your first one is on us. Your nurse reviews it with you before she draws it up.
How long does a visit take if I only want the shot?
A shot on its own is quick. A full bag runs about 45 minutes, and a nurse stays with you for all of it. Either way a physician has looked at your file first.

None of this is medical advice. We have described one injection and how our visits run, and nobody on this team prescribes for anybody. Anemia, thyroid, sleep and anything already in your medicine cabinet belong with the provider who holds your chart. Treat all of it as background reading, never a substitute for medical care, because your chart is not something we can see. Dial 911 if something is urgent.
