Do hangover IV drips work? What the research says, and what we see in Tulsa

By the Anywhere Infusions team · Tulsa, OK

Do hangover IV drips work? Fluid into a vein rehydrates you, and that part is ordinary medicine. The hangover itself is the problem, and federal researchers say no remedy has been proven. So does a hangover IV work the way the ads imply? No. It's a liter of fluid and a nausea medication, carried to your couch in Tulsa for $179, all in. That's all we claim.

We list our sources at the bottom so you can check us.

What the research says about hangover remedies

Start with what the agencies found, because the ads won't. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, part of the NIH, has been through the remedies people pass around and none of them held up: Although many remedies for alleviating hangovers are mentioned on the web and in social media, none have been scientifically proven to be effective. No drip, powder or greasy breakfast has cleared that bar, ours included. So you won't hear a miracle story from one of our nurses. We'd rather teach you what's in the bag and let you decide.

The electrolyte pitch we skip

Electrolytes get sold hard in this industry. NIAAA went looking for the link and came up empty: Research has not found a correlation between the extent of electrolyte disruptions and the severity of hangovers, or the impact of added electrolytes on hangover severity. So we don't build a pitch on them. Hangover Helper carries normal saline, a B-complex, magnesium and Zofran, and our bag pages say what each ingredient does in the body, then stop.

What's going on the morning after

Part of a hangover really is fluid. Alcohol gets in the way of the hormone that tells your kidneys to hold water: Alcohol suppresses the release of vasopressin, a hormone produced by the brain that sends signals to the kidneys causing them to retain fluid. You pass more than you drank, and NIAAA words the result carefully: The mild dehydration that results likely contributes to hangover symptoms such as thirst, fatigue, and a headache. Likely contributes. Not the whole explanation. NIAAA lists five other things going on that morning, bad sleep and inflammation among them. MedlinePlus, from the National Library of Medicine, starts further back than any of them: Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant. This means that it is a drug that slows down brain activity. A liter of saline doesn't undo a night of that, and we won't tell you it does.

Then there's your stomach. Alcohol directly irritates the lining of the stomach and increases acid release. That's why the water you keep sipping comes right back up. A line skips the stomach, and that's the one thing it honestly does better than a glass.

So do hangover IV drips work on the fluid half?

Yes, and that narrow claim is the only one we make. A liter goes in through tubing instead of through an angry stomach. Hangover Helper is $179, all in, so the nurse and the visit are already in that number and add-ons run $25 each. Zofran rides along as a prescription anti-nausea medication so the fluid has a chance to stay put. If the liter's all you came for, Simply Hydrate is $99, saline and nothing else in the bag.

How a morning like this runs here

A registered nurse comes to you: home, office, or hotel. The hotel option is there for travelers, the out of town wedding, game and conference crowd especially. Tulsa is our home base, so visits are often the same day and take about 45 minutes. Weekend morning slots go first, which won't surprise anybody. Same flat pricing in Tulsa, Owasso, Broken Arrow, Collinsville, Bixby, Jenks and Claremore. Sand Springs and Sapulpa cost a flat $25 more. A physician reviews every infusion before anything's drawn up, and your nurse can say no at your door. Nurse owned, physician backed.

When we'd rather you called 911 than us

Some rough mornings aren't hangovers at all. NIAAA lists mental confusion, vomiting, seizures, slow or irregular breathing, clammy skin and trouble staying awake, and its instruction leaves no room: Know the danger signals, and if you suspect that someone has an alcohol overdose, call 911 for help immediately. It adds a line we repeat: Do not wait for the person to have all the symptoms, and be aware that a person who has passed out can die. MedlinePlus puts the odds in one line: Binge drinking raises your risk of injuries, car crashes, and alcohol overdose. A friend you can't rouse belongs in an emergency department, not on a drip.

NIAAA finishes where we do: Ultimately, the only surefire remedy for a hangover is to avoid getting one by drinking in moderation or choosing not to drink. We hang the bag. We'd still rather you woke up not needing one. The FAQ covers the money questions and the safety ones. The menu lists every price. We wrote a separate piece on whether a bag is worth it, which splits the fluid from the vitamins. If you're not sure which one you need this morning, text us and ask.

Quick answers

Do hangover IV drips work better than drinking water?
For fluid, a line has one real edge: it doesn't have to pass through a stomach alcohol has already irritated. For the hangover itself, NIAAA says no remedy has been scientifically proven, and we're not going to argue with the NIH.
Why is there Zofran in the Hangover Helper?
Zofran is a prescription anti-nausea medication. It settles the stomach so the fluid and the vitamins have a chance to stay put. Your nurse reviews every add-on with you first.
What does a hangover visit in Tulsa cost?
Hangover Helper is $179, all in. Add-ons are $25 each. Simply Hydrate, which is saline on its own, is $99. No surprise fees either way.
